It lasted 73 exciting days, but now the ants must move on and so must I.

I liberated them.

Coco Channel Mambo Nº 5

I am happy to be able to announce that yet another bonk occurred. The tunnel west of the Zagatón area hit the sinkhole south of Anatolia and, consequently, another channel came into being, forming the second passage between Birnie Loch and Loch Coruisk.

After Highway 1, Avenida Atlântica, Avenida General Paz and St Marx's Place, this is the 5th channel in this habitat and shall therefore be named Channel Nº 5.

Many thanks (in alphabetical order) to Armstrong, Armstrong, Armstrong, Armstrong and Armstrong. Of course this could not have been achieved without Armstrong, Armstrong and Armstrong. Not to forget Armstrong and all the others. And last but not least: Armstrong.

Its time to give my ants proper names!

AntWorks® suggest the following: "If you decide to name your ants, you might choose Armstrong as a surname".
Now AntWorks® need to be funny to sell their product. Their reasoning goes like this: Ant workers can carry up to 50 times their own weight blah blah blah (and all the crap you learnt at school), so they are very strong, "armstrong" ha ha ha.

I will call them "Armstrong" for a different reason: At the end of the day, they are "space ants" and as we all know: Neil Armstrong made space history. He was the first person ever to NOT set his foot on the moon (because the moon landing was a fake).

This is why I will call my ants "Armstrong".

Of course it is a bit odd to give them all the same name, but for me they all look the same and I don't know how to distinguish them so what else can I possibly do?

Back from my Easter trip to No's ant farm, my own crew surprised me with an architectonic milestone: the western flank of Avenida Atlântica reached Anatolia Den.

This has far reaching implications: from now on it is possible to go from any loch to any other loch in the system without the need to traverse the Highlands. For example you could even go from Loch Eck at the very west to Loch Dungeon at the very east . That's cool and convenient!

Highway 1 and Avenida Atlântica are now connected and form a truly intercontinental highway (sort of).

A historic achievement which was only possible because of the hard work of each individual ant.

Amazing: Space Ant Eggs!

My girlfriend's AntWorks® is quite different to mine: Not only do her ants have focus, they also have eggs!

I thing I have spotted three of them. But are they really eggs? Or are they grub? Or cocoons?

And where do they come from?

I don't know. As soon as this blog gets more page views, I will have the money to educate myself and you as well.

For the meanwhile, just look at this cute ant looking at us with her faithful dog eyes, showing us this wonderful egg/grub/cocoon - making you wanna hug and cuddle that lovely creature.

Easter Ants

Dream Start For Ms No

My girlfriend - lets call her "Ms No" - also got an AntWorks® habitat recently, and the ants arrived just when she was about to leave for Portugal with me. Hence, she could not be with them in their initial days but she could hear from friends what she had missed.
Things got off unbelievably well: her ants were hyperactive right from the start and created two tunnels from the surface to the bottom of the container in their first day.

A passage from the "Highlands" to the "Lowlands" - all in only one day! An achievement my honorable crew still fails to deliver after more than one month.

The environment over there looks very different compared to the one in ASH-1. Those ants really have a focus in their life. Not this dowdy "a bit of tunnel here and a little bonk there".
Now they calmed down a little bit and most of them rest in the hangar which you can see on the bottom right of the picture.

Bonk To Avenida Atlântica

Tunnel C2 bonked into Avenida Atlântica today. A huge success with a wermutstropfen: the crew fell short to create another channel, because they previousley cut off C2 with deposits from another passage.

It is a pity that there is no architect, because I would sack him now.

Three New Tunnels

Three new tunnels in one day is not bad. The crew is happy that I am back, obviously.
All three originate from Loch Coruisk and are directed towards the west.

Busy Monday

This Monday, more has been achieved than during the last 9 days (from a construction point of view).

Once again it is the Zacatón area where the action is. A tunnel the length of half an inch was created heading from the den towards the occident.

Zacatón Bubble (Back from Portugal)

Back am I, and the good news is that I have not seen any new causalities.

As expected, there was not very much progress, but the Zacatón area continues to surprise: Zacatón Den which previously had shrunken to an isolated bubble, grew big again and got re-connected to the Vietcong.

I have no explanation for this. Maybe one of the three ants in the bubble did not pass away and applied an extra shift instead.

Note that the picture above is in black and white because I show ant cadavers for the first time in this blog.

Antworks® say that "should an ant die within one of the tunnels, other ants will usually transport the body to the surface".

But transportation gets difficult if the tunnel around the dead ant dissolves.

I haven't thought about this when I bought the Antworks® farm. Having an ant colony is freaky enough - but displaying pictures of dead insects is holy moly freaky.

Off to Portugal

Portugal is not yet another feature of ASH1, e.g. a new den or a new channel.
Portugal in the context I use it now is a political administrative region of planet earth.
This is where I go for a little bit more than a week.
I have to leave the crew alone now, even though the times are difficult.

They should be fine without me. Antworks(R) say you only have to lift the lid once a week or so to keep them happy.
So I will give them an extra portion of oxygen befor I go.

Unease in the Coruisk System

Meanwhile, whilst Zacatón Den is literally breaking away, ants created another connection from the Vietcong to Highway 1.
Yes, another bonk and at least some progress.
But this new passage has cut off C2 (the tunnel below Highway 1) from the rest of the Coruisk system, leaving another ant trapped.

Strange Transformation

Strange things are going on. Just look at the pictures!

I have no explanation why this can happen.

First somebody seems to carry gel rubble in order to obstruct the passage from Vietcong to Zacatón Den.

Then slowly these deposits seem to melt back to pure gel, cutting off the cave from the rest of the world, virtually leaving 3 ants trapped in an enclave.

And yes, there is a black bar on the very right picture: One of those ants most likely has already become a victim of this scary new development.

The crew is in a stable condition.

This weeks highlight was the connection of a side arm in the Birnie system with Highway 1, which resulted into the creation of Avenida General Paz.

There was a security issue with one member who managed to escape the habitat via an air-hole. It was recaptured quickly and was safely brought back.
In the light of this incident, security measures have been reviewed and tightened. A fact-finding committee has been nominated.

Unfortunately, three heroes died this week whilst on duty. They were heroes.

Another Bonk

When you just think it will not happen anymore, it happens: we have another Bonk.

The left arm which outgrew from the looping which once so elegantly created the connection between Loch Ard and Birnie Loch, finally bumped into Highway 1, and therefore brought to existence the habitat's third channel, which shall be named Avenida General Paz.

Cenote Zacatón

I myself didn't believe it anymore, but there is some progress on the building sites. It is very slow though and humble when compared with the rush during the early days. Those times are history now, but it is good to see there is no complete standstill.

The crew shoveled a nice hole on the floor of Zacatón Den. This dip is now the most abyssal geological feature of ASH-1, and will be therefore - not surprisingly - named Cenote Zacatón, which is - as already explained here - the deepest sinkhole in the world, ever.

Short Freedom

Yesterday the unthinkable happened: An ant escaped.
While I was making my morning coffee, the ant slipped through one of the two tiny air holes in the lid of the habitat.
Fortunately I could spot her and return her safely back. Then I covered these air holes with duct tape.

Nobody was harmed. I don't take it personally.

The Great Escape Attempt

More worrisome is the fact that - soon after I put their world at a place by the window - the crew suddenly became full of beans. But instead of resuming overdue construction work, they used their regained energy to climb up the habitat's walls in an obvious attempt to escape.

This makes me sad, since I try everything to keep them happy.

I would even let them go if I wouldn't know that they wouldn't get very far on British soil at this time of the year.

Zacatón Den

This Saturday I finally had more time to spend with the crew. I didn't have the opportunity to watch them during daytime for two weeks now.

2 weeks ago it was their best time, there was a tunneling frenzy. They managed to dig about ~1cm per hour. Now we stand by maybe 2mm per week? If at all...

In order to boost moral, I positioned ASH-1 close to the window, so as to get them more light then ever before. I did not dare to do that earlier for fear that the direct exposure to sunlight may do them more harm than good.

The thing I noticed was that a bunch of ants quickly relocated to the cave below the Vietcong in the Coruisk system, which - previously - was hardly visited by anyone.

It is time to give this den a proper name: I will call it Zacatón Den, in honour of Cenote Zagatón - the world's deepest sinkhole (so far).

This weeks highlight was the confirmation that a connection between Loch Coruisk and Loch Dungeon has been established and is operational. This was achieved by the creation of a small connecting wing between the main tunnel of Loch Dungeon and the Avenida Atlantica.

No further construction milestones have been accomplished this week.

The crew's condition is stable, although there is increasing concern on the overall health (physiological as well as mental) of its members. The members still lack ambition and drive.

Observations have been also made that there is now a general tendency among the crew members to abandon the tunnel system and move north to the Highlands. Anatolia Den, the once most popular place, has been almost deserted in favour of the Highland's planes at the very west (Santa Catarina Plane) and at the very east (Bahia Plane) .
Officials say there are no immediate reasons for concern about this new development, but promised to investigate further.

Bonk!

Life is still sluggish here and the depression continues.

No wonder that we reach out for every bit of good news: After a phase of suspension followed by disenchantment, I can announce that we have Bonk!

I have spotted a small junction from D1 to Loch Coruisk, which means that travelling from the latter to Loch Dungeon is now much easier - no need to go through the highlands anymore.

I do not know when this exactly has happened, because access is very small and therefore difficult to spot, but I have already seen a crew member slipping through.

Well done. We have now a second channel after Highway 1. Its name shall be Avenida Atlantica.

Escape To The Highlands

Things seem to get worse.

What once has been the domain of some adventurous explorer ants, is now a common scene: If they move at all, they seem to abandon the caves and lochs and dens of ASH-1 and relocate to the Highlands.

Now I have even seen famous Anatolia totally abandoned for the first time (it looks like a ghost town). Instead, the planes of the Highlands are en vogue. Especially Santa Catarina at the very west and Bahia Plane at the very east.

This is a very threatening development, it just indicates that the crew does not like the habitat. I know from other ant colony reports on the web, that other people had the same experience: First a dream start with tunneling like crazy, then a slow down, then a complete halt, then the evacuation of the tunnels and the move to the surface... and then death.

If my crew continues to follow this script as it did until now, Expedition I will be doomed in about two weeks from now.

I try to prevent this by all means of course. I have already re-programmed my thermostat in order to produce some exotic temperatures. Praying may help as well.

Something is not just right!

I have to be honest with myself: something seems to go wrong with my ant farm.

There has not been any significant progress since days.
Construction literally stopped. Everything looks like frozen.

The whole crew is dronish and dull. In fact they do not move anymore. They only move a little bit when I gently bonk on their wall. Gone are the days when they dug 1cm per hour.

This exciting week started with the arrival of the crew by Royal Mail on Thursday, the 22nd of February.

After a short stay in a BOSCH Exxcel refrigerator for 15 minutes, the crew was finally transferred to their Ant Space Habitat (ASH-1) one day later.

The crew only adapted slowly to their new environment, sticking to the initially supplied nutrient paper. Only after this paper was removed 24 hours later, did they hesitantly start digging tunnels.

The first feature they constructed was a small cave, Anatolia Den, where most of the crew lingered throughout the rest of the week.

Construction work was incredible fast during the weekend, where noticeably a connection between two lochs could be established by the creation of Highway 1. Later, Highway 1 was extended towards north-west and led to the birth of Loch Eck - the first naturally created loch.

In the early days, unfortunately, one crew member was killed by a rockfall in the Espirto Santo mountain area. It may well have been their chief designer, judging from the way construction is happening.

All in all impression is that there apparently exists no master plan. Tunneling comes to pass very "ad hoc".

At the end of the first week, construction slowed down significantly and virtually came to an end, which raises lots of serious concerns about the overall health of Expedition I. It seems that some members never leave Anatolia Den, are slack and inanimate.

The Birth Of Loch Eck

Finally the breakthrough!

I can now confirm that there is already a tiny hole at the very corner of Santa Catarina Plane, which is indeed the exit of Highway 1.

That means loch number 5 - the first naturally created loch - is now reality. (The other 4 have been bonked by myself.)

Many thanks to each member of Expedition I for all the hard work and excellent team play.

The new hole shall be called Loch Eck.

Note how amazingly fitting this name is: According to official naming policy, it had to be a loch from Scotland starting with the 5th letter of the alphabet (which is "E"). Now "Eck" in German translates to "corner" and - here we go!

From East To West

Meanwhile, D1 seems to go the extra mile, completely ignoring the murky Loch Coruisk and its Vietcong, and pushing to the west instead. There, most of the crowd is hanging out in Anatolia Den.

Approaching Santa Catarina

Meanwhile, on the other side, C2, which is now part of the channel informally and uncreatively called Highway 1, bumped into the habitat's western edge. From there it turned north towards the Highlands, where it almost created a new loch in an area called the Santa Catarina Plane.

No Bonk

As some of the readers already expected: the tunnel missed the opportunity to become a channel. D1 has no inclination to connect with Loch Coruisk.

Well, there is still hope for a Nice Looping. It wouldn't be there first time.

On the terminology front, I decided to give C1 a proper name: Vietcong. This is to honour - well - nothing. I just like the name.

Please see this as an exception: In general I will not name every single daffy tunnel.

To Bonk Or Not To Bonk

D1 is heading slowley but surley towards Loch Coruisk. Will it bonk the loch this time? You may argue this time it should be easier, since there is no need to "synchronise" with another fast moving tunnel like it was the case with A1 and B1.

Espirito Santo

Espirto Santo is the name of the knoll at the very east of the habitat. It was artificially created by myself, when I bonked a hole which would become Loch Dungeon.
Espirito Santo means "Holy Ghost" in Portuguese, and is one of the 27 states of Brazil. I always thought such naming for an administrative region is a little bit out of place; the Holy Ghost truly deserves something better, more mythical, so I happily named a hole mountain after this guy.

It was at Espirito Santo when a unhappy member was crunched after a major rockfall which was triggered by myself when I bonked the magnifier glass too hard against the habitat wall. The whole habitat subsequently toppled down causing major panicking among the Expedition I crew.

I was seriously thinking of naming a landscape feature after this ant - but unfortunately, I do not know its name.

Where No Action is

Most of the action takes place in Loch Ard and Bernie Loch, which are already connected by Highway 1. Loch Coruisk seems to be abandoned most of the time. This may change soon as D1 from Loch Dungeon is steadily tubing towards its direction.

The Peaceful East

While all the glory is in the west, construction is more tranquil on the other side of the habitat. C2 seems to be on hold, and snatchy is the work on C1. Decent progress is reported from Loch Dungeon, where D1 may become the Expedition I's second channel.

Giving the Highlands a Wide Berth

In another surprising twist, the west flank of the recently created Highway 1 (this is a temporary working name) changed slightly its direction, and will most likely not reach the surface anytime soon. It seems like the birth of the first naturally created loch is postponed. But at least, we will touch the left wall for the first time.

Whilst busy to head east from Loch Ard, the ants opened another front by tunneling into the opposite direction. Looks like the new A2 will soon break through the surface of the gel (the Highlands) and establish another loch.

Failed Connection

The crew finally embarked on digging channels. First, of course, from Anatolia, where most of the members pulled together during the very first hours. They started out to the west, and at the same time, some pioneers started to munch their way from Loch Ard towards the east.
The booklet which came with the space habitat from Antworks(R), speaks about the ant's capability for teamwork, which allows them to connect tunnels as if they would follow the instructions of a senior architect ant.
So the tunnel from Loch Ard (A1) was indeed heading towards the the tunnel from Birnie's (B1) and me and a bottle of red wine were eagerly awaiting the historic moment when they would finally meet each other, to celebrate the first tunnel connection of this habitat.
It did not work out as expected, as you can see in the picture above. They missed each other a little bit. OK this was a first try, this can happen sometimes and they missed each other by about 1 centimeter only.

Anatolia

Ants don't like the cold. They get des-animated if it is too cool.
This is why I had to put the crew members of Expedition I into the fridge for 15 minutes before I could put them into the space habitat. Otherwise they would just run away. (And then I would have to kill them in order to prevent security issues in my room!)
When they feel too cold they do not work and they "huddle" instead. They then hardly move and you wonder if they are dead already.
My small room here in Berkshire can get very cold, so I really feared this project would end quite prematurely. The ants would refuse to construct great tunnels for my viewing pleasure. Instead, they dug a small "cave" below Birnie Loch, where nearly all of them stuck together waiting for some... I don't know what they waited for. I name this cave Anatolia, after a region in Turkey, which is supposed to be the cradle of - not mankind - but at least Europe.
"Anatolia" sounds good, and I am looking forward to the moment when the ants create something which I will name "Patagonia", which also sounds quite good.

The arrival of Expediton I

The ants arrived on Thursday in a small tube via mail. I call them the "Expedition I" in honour of the first crew which moved into the International Space Station (ISS) on the 31st of October 2000, the "Expedition 1". With existing NASA procedures, an expedition lasts about 4 months, until the current astronauts get replaced by another expedition. This time span is similar to the life expectancy of an individual ant, which is between 1 and 4 months. I hope to see a great "Expedition I" followed by a bunch of further expeditions. (The current crew on the ISS is Expedition 14).
In accordance with the instructions, I bonked 4 holes into the blue gel.
I named them after Scottish lochs: Loch Ard, Birnie Loch, Loch Coruisk and Loch Dungeon. With this naming, I try to score a joke, because "loch" in Gaelic means "lake" which is not really what I dug today, but in German the work "loch" word means "hole" - so only in German, the naming makes sense.
